Do Not Sleep On Ovechkin and Capitals

alexander ovechkin 300x225 Do Not Sleep On Ovechkin and CapitalsAlexander Ovechkin tallied 5 points (a goal and 4 assists) Wednesday night as the Washington Capitals defeated the Anaheim Ducks 6-4. Many people in the league have talked about: how well the Bruins are playing in front of Tim Thomas, the Penguins are off to their best start since 1995, San Jose rolling, Marian Hossa gelling with another great Detroit Red Wings team, Minnesota’s fantastic defense, and of course year 100 pour Les Canadiens de Montreal—but do not sleep on the Washington Capitals. The defending Southeast Division champions are once again leading a fairly mediocre pack of teams with a quarter of the season gone. Most will focus on Ovechkin but the Capitals have a more complete team surrounding their superstar this year. Alexander Semin is racking up the points thus far and although the defense is nothing to write home about they absolutely do an adequate job in front of the goaltending duel of Brent Johnson and Jose Theodore who have preformed more than admirably through the first 18 games of the season. Washington will be a very scary team come playoff time because they can score enough to beat anyone on any given night, have a great home ice advantage where they have yet to lose a game in regulation, and now have a team with a full tank of playoff experience. Although I think the Caps need more of a physical presence to be a championship contender (sorry but Donald Brashear cannot do it all himself) they can certainly make a lot of noise nonetheless come April.

Sharks Equipped for Championship Run

devin setoguchi Sharks Equipped for Championship RunThe San Jose Sharks continued to roll over the weekend with a 6-5 come-from-behind win against the home-standing Chicago Blackhawks. There are so many things I love about this team it is incredible. They have the obvious advantages that come with experienced guys like Jeremy Roenick, Joe Thorton, and Patrick Marleau and great goaltending by Evgeni Nabokov. Perhaps more importantly are the things that accompany the leadership these guys provide, which makes the team really stand out; first is the incredible play of first year man Devin Setoguchi who leads the team in goals with 10. His on-ice energy and intensity is second to none and while he may not keep up this scoring tear he is on all season it appears as though the Sharks have struck gold in Setoguchi. Furthermore, the solid play of backup netminder Brian Boucher has been impeccable. Boucher was 4-1 in five starts with a 1.49 goals against average along with a stellar .940 save percentage going into Sunday’s game. The Sharks play a very good defensive style of hockey but also showed Sunday night that they can win high scoring affairs when the opportunity presents itself. It is early in the season but thus far the Sharks have shown they have bought into new head coach Todd McLellan’s system and they have confidence in one another on the ice. Every player knows their role and they play it very well. The Sharks have an incredible 31 points in 19 games and have all the makings of a championship team.

Preseason Outlook on NBA’s top Championship Contenders in 2008-2009 Regular Season

Kobe Bryant may have that same look on his face at the end of this season too.

Kobe Bryant may have that same look on his face at the end of this season too.

You know, basketball is unlike pro football where your schedule can be favorable or brutal depending on whom teams are scheduled to play. But in basketball, you play every team. With that being said, I give you my top contenders for the title this season.

The Celtics have such a swagger. They have stifling interior defense and the stars are all leaders either by example or a mixture of that and charisma. They are a confident bunch from top to bottom.

The New Orleans Hornets are young, quick, defensive, and are lead by the best point guard in the league… Chris Paul. They let it slip against the Spurs, but they are young, and the Spurs are another year older.

The Lakers made it to the Finals, and they cruised in their Western Conference playoff matchups. However, the story was much different in the Finals.

The Lakers seemed to outmatch the Western Conference, but the Celtics won convincingly in the Finals against them so I’d put them ahead of L.A. The Hornets are good, but they are still younger than the Celtics, and ultimately the only have one true superstar against three in Boston.

I’d give the edge to Boston to win it all again.
